Jackie Hill, LICSW

Psychotherapist in NW Washington, D.C.

About me

The decision to come to therapy can be very difficult; the idea of opening up to talk about some of the harder things you are dealing with can be daunting and intimidating-but it doesn't have to be. My work as a clinical social worker has taught me that thoughtful and compassionate reflection through therapy can help individuals grow and change. We all have blind spots and obstacles in our lives, and a warm, understanding, and non-biased perspective can be immensely helpful. Therapy can be a powerful tool in relieving distress, learning about oneself, and living a more fulfilled life.

I work with adolescents, college-aged students, adults, and parents offering a highly individualized approach to work through challenges and obstacles they are facing. Using a warm and engaging approach, I work with clients to create a strong and safe therapeutic relationship and collaborate to create a treatment plan that works for them and their goals. I put a lot of time and effort into getting to know my clients, their world, and their experiences and truly enjoy cultivating these relationships. In sessions, I pair the process of building these relationships with learning and developing new skills through effective therapeutic models such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, and interpersonal models of psychotherapy. Clients have described me as genuine, transparent, funny, supportive, and empathic.

My clinical experience includes working with people with anxiety, depression, ADHD, learning disabilities, navigating life transitions, emerging adulthood, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, school and career challenges, and parenting work. I’ve worked in a variety of settings, including early childhood schools, high schools, college counseling centers, and private practice.

I am licensed in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia as a Clinical Social Worker.

My Training

I received my Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Kenyon College and my Masters of Science in Social Work from Catholic University. During my masters program, I completed internships at The Pathways School and The Catholic University Counseling Center.

After receiving my M.S.W. from Catholic University, I went on to serve as a School Social Worker at an early childhood school in Southeast Washington, D.C. for five years. I then transitioned to a group psychotherapy practice in Washington, D.C., focusing my work on adolescents, college-aged students, young adults, and parents.

I consider myself a life-long learner and truly enjoy studying different treatment models, approaches, and specialties. I have advanced training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and use this modality often with my clients to improve symptoms of anxiety and depression. Additionally, I have advanced training in SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), a unique therapeutic model that addresses and treats a child’s anxiety through targeted parenting work.

My Specialties

Anxiety & Depression

Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. Through therapy, it can be possible to develop new and more helpful ways for you to manage those thoughts and feelings and live the life of your choosing.

Navigating Life Transitions

Life transitions (i.e. transition to college, launching into post graduate life, career transitions, etc.) can be both rewarding and challenging. I enjoy working with clients to talk through and balance the excitement and joy with some of the difficulties that may come accompany these changes.

Relationship Issues

Many people enter therapy because they are struggling in one or more of their relationships with others. Therapy can help you to build and maintain stronger relationships by helping to develop new insights, relational patterns, and healthy boundaries that contribute to fulfilling relationships.

Adolescents, College Age, and Adults

I have broad experience treating adolescents, college-aged students, and adults in therapy. These phases of life can be filled with significant ups and downs and I truly enjoy working with clients to celebrate the highs and work through the lows during these times.

Parenting
Parenting comes with all sorts of joys and difficulties. I work with parents to identify strengths and challenges in this dynamic and help to create healthier, more functional parent-child relationships. I have advanced training in SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) and use this approach to create effective plans with parents to reduce their child's anxiety and the overall impact on the family system.
